TN Wild Side-1 Million Trees.mpg
In a state like Tennessee, it can be easy to take trees for granted. Growing almost everywhere you look, it might seem like we have plenty of these woody perennial plants.
But according to the U.S. Forest Service, more than two million acres of Tennessee's native forests have been cut and more than 500 thousand of those forest acres have simply disappeared, converted to other uses. But we know some people who are trying to change that. In a world where we are often "working for the weekend" you might be hard pressed to find anyone working harder than a volunteer. It seems the more we get out on the Wild Side, the more workers we meet willing to put in a full day for free. This time it's tree planters putting in the hours; and as Annette Nole Hall tells us, the pay off for the Tennessee Tree Project, is priceless.
In 50 years one tree provides over one hundred and thirty thousand dollars in oxygen, air pollution control and storm water drainage benefits. The Tennessee Environmental Council is looking for any school, community or church group willing to help meet the million-tree goal.
