Sensitive Plant Mimosa pudica
Sensitive plant and touch-me-not are two common names for Mimosa pudica. The leaves on this plant appear to shrink and collapse on itself when they are disturbed by touch. The leaves of Sensitive Plant will close at night and reopen in the morning. Scientists think the plant "shrinks," making itself appear less apetizing to predators to protect itself. While the plant is native to South America, in colder climates it can be grown in gardens as an annual and even indoors as a houseplant. In addition to the cool factor of the shrinking leaves, these plants produce beautiful flowers.
